Buffers
A buffer is a chemical or combination of chemicals that keeps pH within normal limits. In living things, the pH of body fluids is maintained within a narrow range, or else health suffers (homeostasis - maintaining the certain pH level). The pH of blood when we are healthy is 7.4. If it drops to about 7, acidosis occurs. If it rises to 7.8, alkalosis results. Both conditions can be life threatening.
Buffers take up excess OH- or H+ ions. Carbonic acid and bicarbonate ions in the blood help to regulate the pH level.
